Cray replaced IBM in u. i. supercomputer project

CHAMPAIGN–University of Illinois said the Seattle-based IBM pulled out citing the cost and technical concerns.

Cray computer online expects that next year, keep the project, which is largely paid for by the National Science Foundation, on track to finish on time.

"We obviously have to do it really fast," said Thom Dunning, Director of the National Center for supercomputer applications school. "NSF's the goal is to keep projects on track as much as you can."

Cost and funding will remain essentially the same, said Cray'S CEO Peter Ungara. NSF will provide more than $ 200 million with the remaining $ 100 million comes from the University and country if Illinois. Cray would have paid $ 188 million, equivalent to about half of the total revenue of the current fiscal year.
